Rhode Island 2014 Plastic Bag Ban Introduced (SB 2314)
According to Environment Rhode Island, “On January 23, 2014, Rhode Island State Rep. Maria Cimini introduced a bill in the Rhode Island House of Representatives to ban plastic bags statewide. The bill prohibits the distribution of disposable plastic shopping bags at the point of sale by Rhode Island retailers, effective January 2015 for large retailers and January 2016 for small businesses.” On April 2, 2014 testimony was heard in Rhode Island Senate’s Environment and Agriculture Committee. Supportive testimony outnumbered the opposition 7 to 1, and a list of 170 businesses logged their support for the bill. The Committee recommended further study of the bill. If it passes, Rhode Island would be the first state-level bag ban policy in the country.
