Law Summary On March 28, 2018, the United Kingdom’s Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced that a beverage container deposit return scheme will be introduced, subject to a consultation process to determine the details of the law and program operation  1. The move was a response to growing concern about plastic litter in the marine environment, and was taken after an exhaustive call for evidence from environmental groups in the United Kingdom and worldwide 2
Date Implemented TBA. A consultation process on implementing deposits throughout the United Kingdom began in summer 2018. Scotland is moving forward separately with its own public consultation process to implement deposits in that country 3. CRI will publish updates as available.
